Recycling plastic is not only friendly to the environment, it is also friendly to the bottom line. Advanced Plastic Recycling
Post-consumer and other plastic materials are sorted by resin type and chemical composition. This is an important first step because it ensures that there is no contamination. Contamination can make a batch of recycled plastic unusable. Any contaminants must be removed from each batch of plastic in order for it to be used again.
Advanced plastic recycling processes use sensors and ejectors to remove contaminants like paper, ink and metals. This speeds up the process and allows for a higher volume of plastic to be recycled.
Plastic materials are then shredded or granulated to reduce their size into more manageable units. Mechanical separators then divide the materials into different colors, shapes and sizes. Separation at this stage also helps further purify the plastic and ensure there are no remaining contaminants.
From Plastic to Pellets
Finally, the recycled plastic is melted and made into pellets. The pellets are then used to create new products using the plastic mold injection process.
Recycling plastic into pellets has several advantages. It allows for easier feeding into injection molding equipment. It provides more uniform melting during the mold injecting process. It also furnishes a more consistent blend of plastic into new products with higher durability. This is because the process of melting plastic and extruding it into pellets increases the material’s tensile strength and wear resistance. For example, pallets made of recycled material last longer and are more cost-efficient than those made of other materials.
The plastic recycling process also produces significant energy efficiencies. According to the Bureau of International Recycling, “there is an 80 to 90% reduction in energy consumption by producing recycled plastic compared to producing plastic from virgin materials.”
As the recycling process becomes faster, more accurate and less labor intensive, products made from recycled plastic will be less expensive. This will have a positive impact on businesses, consumers and the environment.
